Some professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer laws, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.

After minutes of entering one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Inside these communities, posts display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should last, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Measures

A representative for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
