In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
