Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
