A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
